About Narrative Medicine

Physician and scholar Rita Charon stated that narrative medicine is “medicine practiced with the competence to recognize, absorb, interpret, and be moved by the stories of illness.” At UCSF, we are committed to embodying this approach within healthcare.

What we do

Our Purpose: Elevating Care Through Story

At the UCSF Department of Pediatrics, we believe that every patient's story holds the power to heal, teach, and transform. Born from a workshop series for pediatric residents at UCSF Benioff Children's Hospitals, our Narrative Medicine program began as a space for reflection on the complex, lived experiences of children and families in our care. Together, it has grown into a broader movement across UCSF—bringing together healthcare providers, learners, and community members to strengthen the human connection at the heart of medicine.

A Space to Reflect, Connect, and Grow

This platform invites you to pause and listen. To share the moments that moved you. To explore how stories—joyful, painful, and everything in between—shape the way we heal. Here, we preserve stories that resonate, foster meaningful dialogue, and support each other in the pursuit of more compassionate, patient-centered care.

Building a Community of Storytellers and Healers

Rooted in the belief that learning happens best through shared experience, we offer opportunities for reflection, connection, and growth—both virtually and in person. Whether you're a student discovering your path, a seasoned clinician rekindling your sense of purpose, or a community member seeking to share your voice, we invite you to join us.

Together, we are transforming healthcare—one story at a time.
